New energy efficient multi-unit residential buildings (MURB’s) are a wise investment.
Energy efficiencies can be maximized by building a MURB with an EnerGuide rating of at least 80 or better. Prior to construction, the decision to incorporate specific and targeted energy upgrades into your project is easy. You will then have the benefit of lower operating costs and the opportunity to better market the advantages of living in your development.
What We Offer
Efficiency NB’s New Multi-Unit Residential Program provides various financial incentives to developers of new multiple-unit buildings that meet an EnerGuide rating of 80 or better and incorporate additional upgrade measures related to windows and doors, insulation and efficiencies related to heating and ventilation equipment.
Who Qualifies?
Developers of new apartment style buildings (including condominiums) that are not classified as semi-detached or row housing. An energy evaluation is required before construction begins.
Financial Incentives
Efficiency NB offers various levels of financial incentives that can be combined differently by the developer of a new MURB:
- Building Envelope Incentive: $250 per unit for buildings built to meet minimum energy efficiency specifications or $500 per unit for buildings that meet energy efficiency PLUS specifications (see Specifications Table).
- Central Heating Incentive: In addition to the building envelope incentive, a $1,000 per unit grant for buildings heated with high-efficiency low green house gas emitting central heating systems or $2,000 per unit for buildings heated by ground source heat pump or other low GHG option recommended by Efficiency NB’s senior technical advisor (see Specifications Table).
Maximum building incentive: For buildings that fall under Part 9* of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), the maximum incentive from Efficiency NB is limited to the least of a) 24 times the per unit incentive or b) a maximum of $35,000. For non Part 9 buildings, the total incentive is limited to the least of a) 40 times the per unit incentive or b) a maximum of $60,000. The ENERGY STAR Bonus detailed below is in addition to these specified maximum incentives.
- An additional ENERGY STAR bonus incentive of $75 per unit for an ENERGY STAR rated refrigerator or $125 per unit for an ENERGY STAR rated refrigerator and clothes washer is available to developers whose building qualifies for Efficiency NB’s New Multi-Unit Residential Program incentive.
- A contribution of 50% to the cost of required energy evaluation will be made to the maximum noted on the following schedule:
Number of residential units in property
| Maximum contribution
|
| 2-3 units | $350 |
| 4-6 units | $500 |
| 7-9 units | $650 |
| 10-12 units | $750 |
| 13+ units | $875 |
* Definition of Part 9 of NBCC: A building consisting of no more than three storeys above grade, and a footprint no larger than 600 sq. meters (6456 sq. ft).
