EnerGuide 80 and R-2000 Homes

There are plenty of reasons to choose an EnerGuide 80 or R-2000 energy efficient new home.

An energy efficient home will save you money year after year

All things considered, the monthly cost of owning and living in an energy efficient home such as an EnerGuide 80 or an R-2000 is less than the cost of living in a conventional, unimproved home. An energy efficient home may cost a bit more than a conventionally built home, but energy savings can more than pay for the extra up front investment. The result? Savings start the day you move into your new energy efficient home and continue for as long as you own it.

An energy efficient home gives you the option of lowering your monthly payments by lengthening the term of your mortgage through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

An energy efficient home protects you from future energy price increases

Rising global energy prices mean higher home heating costs. Modern energy efficient houses can help protect homeowners from rising energy costs by minimizing the amount of energy consumed.

An energy efficient home has a higher resale value

Studies show that energy efficiency is a high priority for today’s homebuyer, and rising energy prices will make it an even more important factor in the future. When you invest in energy efficiency, you’ll save money every day, and you can recover your investment when the time comes to sell your house.

Building to a high standard is less expensive than renovating later

The best time to make energy efficiency upgrades to your home is when it is being planned and built. Common upgrades you can choose that are most cost effective at the time of construction include:

  • Increasing the insulation value of walls
  • Installing ENERGY STAR® windows instead of regular windows
  • Installing a more efficient home heating system
  • Insulating basement walls
  • Adding extra attic insulation

The ENERGY STAR® mark is administered and promoted in Canada by Natural Resources Canada and is registered in Canada by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

An energy efficient home is kinder to our environment

Energy efficient homes have a far lower impact on the environment because they consume less energy. It is estimated that EnerGuide 80 and R-2000 homes produce nearly 6 tonnes fewer greenhouse gases annually than average conventional homes.

EnerGuide 80 and R-2000: recognized standards backed by the Government of Canada

Anyone can claim that a house is energy efficient – but the EnerGuide Rating Service and the R-2000 certification offer a sure way to prove it. The EnerGuide Rating Service was developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). It is an independent, science-based evaluation of a home that results in an energy efficiency rating on a scale of 0 to 100. A rating of 80 or better is proof that a home is highly energy efficient.

R-2000 is a well known new home quality standard developed by NRCan and the Canadian Home Builders Association. Every R-2000 home must achieve an EnerGuide rating of at least 80 before it can be certified – so every certified R-2000 home is automatically an EnerGuide 80 home too.

All EnerGuide and R-2000 homes are registered and issued a label with their official rating. Because EnerGuide and R-2000 are backed by the Government of Canada, they offer homeowners unmatched reliability and confidence.
