Existing Multi Unit Residential Building Upgrades Program

 existing_murbs_splash-en.jpg

Most multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs), regardless of their age, can be made more efficient through specific and targeted energy upgrades.

What we offer

Efficiency NB’s Energy Efficiency Upgrades Program for Multi-Unit Residential Buildings provides financial assistance to owners of residential buildings who want to make their buildings more energy efficient.

Financial incentive

  • Reduced residential energy assessment service fees: Efficiency NB will subsidize up to 50% of the cost of an energy assessment. Your reduced cost is based on the number of units in your MURB:
Number of residential units in property
Cost of evaluation to property owner
2-3 units $350
4-6 units $500
7-9 units $650
10-12 units $750
13+ units $875
  • Grant: Eligible building owners may apply for a grant to help offset the cost of energy efficiency upgrades made to their property. The grant will be calculated at 20% of the cost of recommended upgrades completed (including HST), with a maximum grant as follows:
Number of residential units in property
Maximum grant
2-3 units $3,000
4-6 units $6,000
7-9 units $9,000
10-12 units $12,000
13+ units $15,000
Note: Owner-occupied 2-3 units MURBs are eligible to receive a $100 coupon to reduce cost of the residential assessment fee and opt for an interest free loan of up to $15,000 repayable over a maximum of 6 year term instead of a grant.

  • Home Heating System Bonus: An additional $500 is available until March 31, 2010 for replacement of low efficiency home heating systems with high-efficiency ENERGY STAR® or EPA rated systems.

    Efficiency NB will offer an additional $500 bonus to homeowners going through the Existing Homes Upgrades Program or the Existing Multi unit Residential Building Program who upgrade their existing heating system or wood burning appliance to an energy efficient system.

    The $500 Home Heating System Upgrade Bonus is available to program participants who install an ENERGY STAR rated central heating system or an EPA rated wood burning appliance between November 5, 2008 and March 31, 2010.

Who qualifies?

Owners of residential properties having 2 or more units and not more than 3 storeys high (with a footprint of less than 600m2 or 6,456 ft2).* If you already received a contribution from the Energy Efficient New Multi-Unit Buildings Program for your home you do not qualify.

* Larger apartment buildings are eligible for assistance under the Energy Smart Commercial Buildings Retrofit Program.

How does it work?

  • An energy advisor performs an initial energy efficiency assessment and provides a detailed written pre-upgrade report that includes:
    • An analysis of the building’s energy loss;
    • Customized recommendations for cost effective upgrades;
    • The building’s current energy efficiency rating; and
    • The potential rating based on recommended upgrades.
  • Complete some or all of the upgrades in the pre-upgrade report as recommended by your energy advisor within 18 months from the date on your report and schedule a post-upgrade assessment (no additional cost to you).
  • The energy advisor will return to conduct the post-upgrade assessment and provide a new energy efficiency rating.
  • Submit the completed application form along with the following documents:
    • Copies of both the initial and final reports;
    • The checklist provided by the energy advisor which confirms the energy upgrades;
    • Receipts for upgrade work (materials and labour).
  • A grant cheque is mailed to the eligible applicants.
  • Loan amount will be electronically transferred to the applicant’s account (only available for owner-occupied 2-3 unit MURBs).
