Energy efficiencies can be maximized by building a home with;
OPTION 1: an EnerGuide rating of at least 80
OPTION 2: an R-2000 certification
OPTION 3: your house meets all Efficiency NB’s Mandatory Specifications*.


What we offer

The New Homes Program provides financial assistance to first owners of new homes that meet options 1, 2 or 3 as listed above. The New Homes Program also encourages the use of high efficiency non-electric central heating options such as natural gas, oil, geothermal, and/or wood systems.

There are three levels of financial incentive available to first owners of new homes:

  • Basic Grant: $1,000 for homes that have 1)an EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher; or 2)are R-2000 certified homes, or 3) have all the Mandatory Specifications* OR;
  • Central Heating, Electric: $2,000 for homes that have 1) an EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher; or 2) are R-2000 certified homes; or 3) have all the Mandatory Specifications* and have an ENERGY STAR rated central heating system, such as an electric boiler or air source heat pump OR;
  • Central Heating, Non-Electric: $3,000 for homes that have 1) an EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher; or 2) are R-2000 certified homes; or 3) have all the Mandatory Specifications* and that have an ENERGY STAR rated central heating system using a nonelectric fuel source such as natural gas, oil or a geothermal heat pump, or an EPA rated wood furnace.

In addition the following rebate and bonus also apply :

New Homes EnerGuide Rating Service Rebate: Efficiency NB will subsidize up to 50% of the cost of a New Home EnerGuide Rating to a maximum of $250 when you submit your completed application form. Note: Rebate is only eligible with receipts dated February 10th, 2009 or later.
ENERGY STAR Bonus: An additional ENERGY STAR bonus incentive of $250 is available as a top-up to any of the three grants to homeowners who install energy efficient lighting and purchase two ENERGY STAR rated home appliances among the following: refrigerator, freezer, clothes washer.

Who qualifies?

First owners of new detached, semi-detached or row houses.
Homeowners must schedule their energy evaluation within six months of occupancy.

How does it work?

  • If you are: - Building a home: You have three OPTIONS:
OPTION 1: An EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher. We recommend having drawings and specifications reviewed by a licensed New Home EnerGuide Rating Service Provider before you build. They will help you determine what features are required to meet an EnerGuide rating of 80.

OPTION 2: An R-2000 certification. A certified R-2000 builder will take care of this review if you are building an R-2000 home.

OPTION 3: Meet all requirements of the Mandatory Specifications*. Ask your builder to build your home with all the minimum qualifying specifications detailed in Efficiency NB’s Mandatory Specifications*. You will have to call a licensed New Home EnerGuide Rating Service Provider to have an Energy Advisor validate that your home meets all Mandatory Specifications* and provide you with an EnerGuide label.

 

  • If you are: - Buying a home: You have three OPTIONS:
OPTION 1: An EnerGuide rating of 80 at least. If the rating is not already provided by the builder, call a licensed New Home EnerGuide Rating Service Provider to have an Energy Advisor evaluate your home.

OPTION 2: An R-2000 certification. If the home is a certified R-2000, it qualifies.

OPTION 3: Meet all requirements of Efficiency NB’s Mandatory Specifications*. If your home was built to meet all the minimum qualifying specifications of the Mandatory Spec’s it will qualify. You will have to call a licensed New Home EnerGuide Rating Service Provider to have an Energy Advisor validate that your home meets all Mandatory Specifications* and provide you with an EnerGuide label.

 

  • Send a copy of 1) the EnerGuide Label of 80 or higher; or 2) the R-2000 Certificate, or 3) the Mandatory Specifications* checklist completed by the Energy Advisor and a copy of your EnerGuide label, and the completed application form to Efficiency NB. Attach a copy of the receipt for your New Home EnerGuide Rating Service payment for a rebate. Also, if you are applying for the ENERGY STAR bonus, be sure to submit copies of your receipts and a proof that your appliances are ENERGY STAR rated.
  • A grant cheque will be mailed to qualifying applicants.
