Find a Contractor

Home renovations can range from small do-it-yourself projects to very large projects requiring the services of one or more building contractors. The process of hiring a contractor is extremely important. To ensure you hire a quality contractor who will meet your expectations, you must do some of your own research and consider following the process outlined below.

Step 1: What to do when you hire a contractor

Step 2: Find a contractor in your area

Step 1: What to do when you hire a contractor

  1. Know who you’re dealing with!

  2. Ask contractors to provide customer references and take the time to call these homeowners.

  3. Make sure you’re protected from risks!

  4. A reputable contractor should have:

    1)  business liability insurance

    2)  workers’ compensation coverage

    3)  an HST or Business number

    A reputable contractor should provide:

    1)  written receipts

    2)  a written warranty

A responsible homeowner should be aware of:

    1)  building codes and permits

    2)  home insurance coverage during renovations

    3)  lien regulations

  5. Get it in Writing!

  6. Having a written contract is essential. It helps protect you from the nightmares of lawsuits. Don’t sign it unless you are satisfied it addresses all the necessary details and reflects what you have agreed to.

Step 2: Find a contractor in your area

Hiring the right contractor is essential. Make sure you do your homework before you hire someone to work on your renovation project as it could be expensive if you don’t get the desired results!

The following contractors have completed the Energy Efficient Renovation workshop developed by Natural Resources Canada and sponsored by Efficiency NB. This two-day workshop focuses on the unique challenges faced when improving the energy efficiency of existing homes. The workshop covers basic principles related to heat loss, air leakage and moisture control in existing housing.

This directory has been developed to help you find available contractors in your area but should not be considered an endorsement. Doing your own research, asking for references and following the hiring process outlined above is still recommended.
