AN ENERGY EFFICIENT TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY

In an effort to promote to residents the environmental and energy saving benefits of using energy efficient LED Christmas Lights, the Town of Quispamsis’ Climate Change Committee organized an LED Christmas Light Exchange.  This new program for town residents took place in November 2011 during the popular Christmas Tree Lighting Festivities held annually at the Arts & Culture Park.  The Town itself only used LED lights for its elaborate Christmas display.

Residents were encouraged to “trade in” a strand of their traditional incandescent Christmas lights for a straight of energy efficiency LED lights.   The town also matched a suggested one dollar donation to the Kennebecasis Valley Food Basket.

In total, the Town distributed 120 strands of lights and raised $459 for the Food Basket.  The real winners were town residents who saved nearly $4,700 on energy costs by swapping their lights for LED strands and helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,300 kg.

If all Quispamsis households (5,197 in total) exchanged one strand of incandescent Christmas Lights with a strand of LED lights, residents could save up to $201,400 on energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 185 tonnes, the equivalent of taking 35 passenger vehicles off the road for one year.

The Town’s Climate Change Committee is already looking forward to their next holiday season initiative!

LEADING BY EXAMPLE:  MUNICIPAL BUILDING RETROFITS

The village of Belledune has completed energy audits on its five municipal facilities with help from Enerplan consultants. The work is now completed and the village expects energy savings to be approximately $29,000/year. This decreased energy use will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by these facilities by about 167 tonnes or the equivalent of taking 28 passenger vehicles off the road for a year.

The village became one of New Brunswick’s leading communities in promoting energy efficiency and taking action on climate change on September 19, 2008 when it announced a community conservation plan in partnership with Efficiency NB.

FREE BUILDING PERMITS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES
bouctouche_permits_sm.jpg

Residents of Bouctouche are getting an incentive for building energy efficient homes. Town council passed a resolution to waive the cost of building permits for all new houses built to an EnerGuide 80 or R-2000 standard.

Combine this saving with the incentives available through Efficiency NB’s New Homes Program and homeowners benefit from some significant savings when choosing to build energy efficient homes.

Bouctouche is a small, Kent County town along the shores of the Northumberland Strait. As part of its “Thinking Green Campaign”, the Town has been working with Efficiency NB on reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Every new energy efficient home will generate nearly six tonnes less greenhouse gases than a conventional home.

LED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

For the town of Bouctouche, a coastal town along the shores of Northumberland Strait, Christmas bills were a little lighter last year. No, the Mayor didn’t send fewer Christmas cards. And the town didn’t cut back on decorations either, but they did make an effort to “green” Christmas.

As part of its ongoing Green Plan, Bouctouche town staff replaced all of the incandescent holiday lights with LED lights and saved more than 90% of the energy costs to keep the decorations lit.

Working with NB Power the town measured the energy consumption for its holiday lights both before and after replacing the lights. A typical energy bill for Christmas lighting in Bouctouche was $640. After replacing lights with LED lights the bill dropped to only $17. Actually, town staff expect to recover the costs of the LED light purchase through energy cost savings in only two years.

SAVING ENERGY FOR FUN & FITNESS

People living in the Village of Perth-Andover are working hard to conserve energy and the Village is saying thank-you by promoting family fun and fitness and offering free swimming and skating as part of its community energy efficiency campaign.

Since June 2007, the village, which operates New Brunswick’s smallest municipal electrical utility, has been working with Efficiency NB on an energy conservation program to decrease energy use in the small community.

Perth-Andover Mayor, Rick Beaulieu is proud that Perth-Andover is one of New Brunswick’s leading energy efficient communities. “There is a role for each of us to play in decreasing energy use and the impact of energy on the environment. I am proud that our residents have been helping us achieve our ambitious goals so, it makes sense that we give something back,” he said.

DOOR-TO-DOOR DELIVERY OF GREEN-UP TOOL KITS
bathurst_launch.jpg

The City of Bathurst and Bathurst Sustainable Development joined with Efficiency NB to launch the Bathurst Energy Efficiency Community Campaign on October 18, 2008.

The campaign kicked off with 3,800 Bathurst homes receiving a Green up Tool Kit which included one energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulb, brochures, and information on available rebates from the energy efficiency programs of Efficiency NB.  The kits were delivered door to door by student volunteers from the Environmental Science and Leadership classes from Bathurst High and Ecole Secondaire Nepisiquit.

The tool kits also included an entry form for a chance to be one of 50 homes selected for a bulb swap of up to 12 CFL bulbs per home.  Close to 900 contest entry forms were returned and over 800 households made commitments to taking action to reduce GHG emissions and reduce energy consumption!
