Arenas and Curling Rinks

Energy consumption generates greenhouse gases (GHG) and accounts for a significant business expense. By implementing energy efficiency measures and practices, businesses get more value from the energy they purchase while lessening their impact on the environment.

Many opportunities exist for municipal arenas to decrease energy consumption and realize cost savings. The energy efficiency measures listed include recommendations for upgrades that can improve aesthetics, enhance user experience and lower maintenance costs. All of these measures should be evaluated for each individual building first by a professional and a comprehensive energy audit may be beneficial.

Typical energy efficiency measures

Refrigeration

  • Low emissivity ceiling
  • Brine Pump Control
      • Infrared sensor
      • Two-speed pumps
      • Variable speed pumps
  • Ice temperature control scheduling
  • Discharge pressure control
  • Bleacher temperature control
  • Dehumidification
  • Ice thickness control
  • Adequate water volume for resurfacing
  • Condenser Heat Recovery for underfloor heating
  • Condenser Heat Recovery for snow melting

HVAC

  • Time scheduling of fans and exhaust
  • Temperature set back
  • Condenser Heat Recovery for space heating
  • Exhaust air heat recovery
  • High efficiency boilers and heaters
  • Heat pumps –Air source and ground source

Lighting

  • T5 or T8 for Rink Lighting with multilevel control
  • T12 replacement with T8 lamps
  • Lower wattage replacement lamps
  • Occupancy sensors

Hot Water

  • Desuperheater for resurfacing water
  • Desuperheater for resurfacing sanitary water
  • High efficiency water heaters (other than electric)
  • Low flow shower heads

Back by popular demand! Efficiency NB will be offering a one-day arenas workshop which will provide participants with a good understanding of energy usage in a typical arena. Click here for more details.
